How to Recover Deleted Items in Outlook video

Microsoft Tips

When you accidentally delete an item from your Outlook mailbox, don’t panic, you can often recover it within a few clicks. Depending on the type of email account you have in Outlook, depends on your method of recovery. In this short video, we’re going to show you how to recover your deleted items, even if they’ve been removed from the deleted items folder too.

Step by step

The first place to look for your deleted item is the ‘deleted items’ or ‘trash’ folder often located just below your inbox, sent, and drafts folders. Use the search bar to find the item you want to retrieve, right-click it, and then select Move > Other Folder. If you can’t find the item there, then follow these next steps.

  1. Ensure you’re online and connected to the mail server.
  1. In Outlook, go to your email folder list and select Delete Items.
  1. In the Folder menu at the top, select Recover Deleted Items.
  1. Select the items you’d like to recover, and click Restore.
  1. If you were not able to find your deleted item in the Recover Deleted Items window, contact your admin. They might be able to use the eDiscovery Centre to find the message.

Where do recovered items go?

When you recover items from the Recoverable Items folder, they are moved to the Deleted Items folder. After you recover an item, you can find it in your Deleted Items folder and then you can move it to another folder from there.
