Exploring Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD)

Blogs and insights

Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) is a comprehensive desktop and app virtualization service that runs in the Cloud, providing you with a full Windows 10 desktop experience on any device you choose. It’s the only Virtual Desktop Infrastructure that gives you simplified management, delivers multi-session Windows 10, and optimisations for Microsoft 365 Desktop Applications. Did we mention, all this is it’s delivered exclusively on Azure, so it’s also the most secure, not just the most productive virtual experience you can use, and, you only pay for what you use, enabling you to easily scale up and scale down to accommodate peaks.

Overview of Key Capabilities of WVD

Manage a fully scalable and flexible virtual desktop environment:

WVD allows you to plan, build, and run a full desktop virtualization environment from your Azure subscription removing the requirement for additional gateway servers, and complex access management, all supported by multi-factor authentication and conditional access out of the box. You can also reduce costs by utilising pooled, multi-session resources. The Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session capabilities in WVD enables you to reduce the overheads associated with VM’s and Operating Systems, whilst still providing the same resources and experiences to your users.

Deploy and Manage virtual desktops as required:

You can publish as many host pools (a collection of one or more identical VM’s) needed to cater for diverse workloads. Newly released features in the spring update provide a modern environment to manage the environment, to scale up/down resources, assign users or groups of users and publish applications. The intelligent Diagnostics Service allows you to troubleshoot errors, and as you manage your environment you can utilise built-in delegated access to assign users and collect analytics to better understand varying configurations and user errors.

Ease of Use:

Once your users are assigned, they can launch any WVD client to connect to their Desktops and Applications on any device through the native app on Windows, iOS, Android or a standard web browser.

WVD and Key Business Requirements

Windows Virtual Desktop is an appealing solution for enterprises looking to feel the benefits virtual environments can facilitate but without many of the traditional complications and costs.  A great advantage of WVD is that it doesn’t require an additional per-user licensing to run (unlike other VM’s such as Citrix and VMWare), all that’s required is a Windows 10 E3 or Microsoft 365 license, and an optimized environment (though that’s typical with any successful VM deployment). Another appealing factor is the fit-for-use case. WVD holds native support for Windows, iOS, Android, MacOS, and HTML5 environments, meaning a WVD can be run on any mainstream device. Opening a world of possibilities for your users and where they are required to operate.  There are new features coming to WVD in the coming weeks and months, notably, improved real-time audio and video streaming for Teams, traditionally a premium feature exclusive to Citrix.   As our global economies look to explore the new demands for greater flexibility, security, governance and scalability, there’s no denying that Desktop Virtualisation is a solution not to be overlooked.  Have a snapshot of Windows Virtual Desktop in my short demo!  If you’re interested in finding out how to Plan, Build and Run your Windows Virtual Desktop environment then please request a call back using the contact form below.
