It All Starts with Identity – Let’s Talk Cyber Security

Cybersecurity

What Does ‘Identity’ Mean?

In the simplest terms, think of an identity in security as a digital ID card. Just like your physical ID card has your photo, name, and other details that prove who you are, a digital identity does something similar in the online world.

It can be things like your username or email and is proven through passwords or biometrics (like fingerprints). This identity determines what you can access online, like your emails or social media, and helps keep your information safe and private. Think of it as your unique online fingerprint.

The Importance of Identity and Access Management in Your Business

Managing who can see and do what in a company (known as Identity and Access Management or IAM) is crucial for businesses because it enhances security by preventing unauthorised data access, ensures compliance with various data protection laws, improves efficiency and productivity through streamlined access to resources, reduces the risk of internal threats, builds customer trust by demonstrating data security commitment, assists in audits and reporting, and offers flexibility and scalability for growing businesses.

Social Engineering in 2024

Social engineering is a technique used to manipulate or deceive people into giving out confidential information or performing actions that may compromise their digital Identity. It relies on human psychology rather than technical hacking methods. Social engineers exploit individuals’ natural tendencies to trust, be helpful, or fear authority. The goal is often to gain unauthorised access to systems, data, or physical locations, or to trick individuals into breaking security protocols often done through emails which is known as ‘Phishing’.

Phishing remains the most common threat vector with 79% of UK businesses experiencing attempted cyber attacks via email in 2023. To make matters worse, AI has taken phishing to a whole new level. Hackers can make phishing emails look more convincing than ever with the help of AI.

Start with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a key element in identity and access management. MFA adds additional layers of protection beyond just a username and password. MFA requires users to provide two or more verification factors to gain access to a resource like an online account, a computer system, or a database. This makes unauthorised access significantly more difficult.

The 848 Group has over a decade of experience in delivering secure cloud-first solutions. We can help you patch your vulnerabilities and strengthen your security with extra protection and security solutions including MFA, security design, vulnerability assessments and more.
