Now a commonplace feature, Skype was once a revolutionary piece of software, the first to introduce video calling to the masses. In its 10 years, it’s helped millions of people to connect- from long distance lovers to family from afar, we’ve likely taken advantage of its stellar video calling capacities. In the modern era, Skype has expanded to include translation abilities, group calling, and an app that’s been downloaded 750 million times. With 2 trillion minutes of free Skype video calls in its history, Skype’s definitely only got one way to go- and that’s up.

Bing gets a makeover

Microsoft have announced they’re giving the search engine it’s second makeover since it’s inception, featuring a slightly altered logo and a renovated colour scheme. Bing is the default search engine for Windows 10, currently holding 21% of the market share, and the runner-up for the leading search engine (nobody say the G word…). Let’s hope the new ‘teal’ colour scheme can up their statistics.

Beware who you’re messaging at work…

In a strange story this week, the European Court of Human Rights have ruled in Romania that a boss was correct in examining his staff member’s online interaction. The man in question had been using work-based messenger services to chat to his brother and his fiancée during working hours. The judge ruled that a boss is within their rights to check the work-based logs of their staff, and to supervise what their staff are doing during work hours. It might be worth keeping this in mind and keeping your last-night-TV-conversations strictly to your lunch break.

Weirdest tech story of the week: Alton Towers is creating a space experience

A little local news this week: Alton towers are launching the first ever coaster dedicated to virtual reality. Equipping users with headsets, the riders will be taken on a trip through space, experiencing 3.5Gs- even greater than what astronauts face. It’s a tech facelift for the ride ‘Air’, which many readers will recognise. This idea sounds great, but whether the virtual effects will exacerbate travel sickness remains to be seen.

We’d love to hear your thoughts!
