Welcome back to The 848 Update! We’re here to give you the need-to-know guide on all that has happened this week in the world of technology. Released every Friday, 848 aims to sum it all up in 500 words or less! Check back every week for more.

HTC takes aim at Apple

I’m a little too young to remember the 1984 Apple advert for its first ever Macintosh, but it’s certainly a concept to behold. Painting the rest of the industry of a same-faced, soulless industry, Apple crafted their own brand as something anti-corporate, edgy, and different. Excellent marketing there, Apple. However, HTC have released their own advert for the new One A9 device, which relies heavily on the motifs created by Apple back in 1984- only this time, Apple is the soulless corporate enemy.  The ‘hero’ of the advert parkour’s his way onto a table surrounded by of all-white mannequins, and kicks everything on it to the floor as he runs- including a plate piled high with white apples. Not subtle, HTC, but brilliant. Whether you’re on team Apple or team HTC, you can’t deny this has got our attention. Take a look below and see what you think.

BlackBerry Priv brings the QWERTY keyboard into 2015

It’s been a while since Blackberrys have been on the mobile device scene. These days, Blackberry make their money through security software, but they’ve returned to the handset market with their new ‘Blackberry Priv’ device. The most unique thing about this device is that they’ve incorporated their trademark QWERTY keyboard, a feature most smartphones have already moved away from. The keyboard slides out from under a curved touchscreen, a throwback to the era of slider phones. This phone would have been the peak of fashion in 2008, and it’s quite a bold choice to bring to the modern market. It’s a little too soon for reviews, but with an 18MP camera, a Gorilla glass screen, and an Android operation system, the Priv has at least got a fighting chance.

A 10 year old showcased a fantastic app this week, making all us adults feel inferior.

Alexander Knoll, a 10-year-old American CEO, took his new app to Dublin’s Web Summit this week. The app is called the ‘Ability App’ and it’s designed to inform disabled people about disability-friendly services, employment, and accessibility in their local area. We’re sincerely hoping he can get funding, and bring his idea to the UK market!

Weirdest tech story of the week: Twitter replaces it’s ‘favourites’ star symbol with a new heart icon, chaos ensues.

[/av_textblock]

[av_two_third first]
Okay, so perhaps I’m exaggerating a little- but changing the little icon has created quite a commotion in the twittersphere. Many people have suggested twitter is copying other social media networks, taking the term ‘likes’ from Facebook, and the hearts symbol itself from Instagram or Tumblr. This immense reaction to such a miniscule change is probably more newsworthy than the change itself. Take note, web designers.
