Welcome back to The 848 Update! After a brief hiatus, we’ve returned to give you the need-to-know guide on all that has happened this week in the world of technology. Released every Friday, 848 aims to sum it all up in 500 words or less! Check back every week for more.

Let’s start out light-hearted: Google have released another Google Doodle

They’ve done it again- Google are here to ruin your productivity with a completely adorable, interactive logo. Celebrate Halloween by picking a team colour and flying your witch to the finish line for the ‘Candy Cup’. It may not be the most serious tech story out there today, but I can promise you it’s the most fun (Go team green!).

A bad week for British business IT

At the start of this week, Marks & Spencer had to close their website due to an error in which customers were logging into their account… and seeing personal details of other people. M&S claimed this was an internal ‘technical issue’, rather than a hacking attempt. Similarly, about 2,200 British Gas customers have had their email addresses and account passwords posted online. British Gas have claimed this information did not come from their network, either via hack or technical error, meaning the data is likely the result of a phishing campaign or a data leak elsewhere. And the pièce de résistance is the TalkTalk data leak, in which a ‘significant and sustained cyberattack’ compromised their website and lead to important customer information, including banking and credit card details, being leaked. Even more shockingly, the police have held in suspicion a 15-year-old boy and arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with this case. It’s a miserable week for data security, and some serious investigative work is needed- although I think the teenager responsible is more likely to get a job offer than a prison sentence.

Safe Harbour no more

Safe harbour is a legal policy agreement which regulates the way the US exports, handles and manages the data of citizens in the EU. 3 weeks ago, the European Court of Justice ruled that companies within this agreement can no longer be trusted to provide suitable levels of data protection. This has meant many UK businesses have been thrown into turmoil over the safety of their cloud storage software, as American companies try to frantically reassure their EU customers that nothing has changed. I think this stems more from a panic about how America handles their data (remember Edward Snowden?) than any concrete evidence or incident, but watch this space.

Weirdest tech story of the week: a robot riding a motorbike

I’m serious. Yamaha released the droid called ‘Motobot’ at the Tokyo Motor show, and it’s a video you really need to see.
