Welcome to The 848 Update, a need-to-know guide for all that has happened this week in the world of technology. Released every Friday, 848 aims to sum it all up in 500 words or less! Check back every week for more.

Google Announcement

Google held an announcement event this week, introducing some brand new devices to the market. This included two new android phones, named the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X, boasting (among other things) speedy charging and fingerprint sensors. In a recent forum, the engineers announced that the P stands for ‘Premium’ and X ‘because it sounds cool’… at least they’re honest, I suppose. The new Chromecast is already predicted to be a huge seller, and the Pixel C is already set to contend with other hybrid tablets on the market.

Google and Microsoft kiss and make up

We were all surprised when Apple brought Microsoft on stage at their announcement last month- what happened to all the snide comments and attempts to one-up one another? Yet it seems Microsoft is making friends elsewhere, after having settled their court case with Google- a case that has been going since 2010 over patented tech. Finally, there’s a little more collaboration in the industry. Come on guys, hug it out.

The world connects

The technology industry might just have warmed your heart this week! Just as Google pledged to provide free WiFi to 400 rail stations in India, reaching 10 million passengers a day, Microsoft joined ranks to deliver affordable broadband connections to 500,000 Indian villages. Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and even celebrities have entered into a campaign to get universal internet access by as soon as 2020. This could help to raise thousands out of poverty, and bring us as a world closer together. We approve.

Starbucks on the go

[av_image src=’http://www.848.co/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Starbucks-logo-vector-720×340.png’ attachment=’47165′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ styling=” hover=’av-hover-grow’ link=” target=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ animation=’no-animation’][/av_image]

October has blown into our lives this week, and I’m sure the Autumn demands for hot chocolates and pumpkin spiced lattes has gone through the roof. The tech world is here to save you from the queues, however- Starbucks is trialling a mobile app in London stores, which allows you to pre-order your drinks so you can beat the queues. Technology has never been sweeter.

Weirdest tech story of the week

[av_image src=’http://www.848.co/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/snowden-joins-twitter-620×321.jpg’ attachment=’44028′ attachment_size=’entry_with_sidebar’ align=’center’ animation=’bottom-to-top’ styling=” hover=” link=” target=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’][/av_image]

You may remember Edward Snowden, an American whistleblower who unveiled private information about the US government’s mass surveillance programme. Although he has been exiled from America for the past 2 years and is believed to currently be in Russia, he has set up a twitter account- and follows only one other, the official account of the NSA. Bold move.

That’s it for this week- we’d love to hear your thoughts on this!
