Nokia’s comeback

[av_video src=’https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYm7hh9ys0c’ format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′]

We all remember Nokia phones- in fact, I’m willing to bet we all have one lying around the house somewhere, hanging out at the back of a drawer. Nowadays they’re only brought out for holidays and festivals, but once upon a time they were revolutionary. The classic ringtone, the games of snake, the battery that could easily last a week… and of course, the fact that they seem to be indestructible contributed to that. An ad recently uploaded to Nokia’s YouTube channel suggests that Nokia might be about to make a comeback. Rather than bringing back the classic 3310, however, Nokia seem to have previewed a new phone and tablet, bringing them straight into the modern age. When Nokia was bought out by Microsoft in 2014, they promised we’d be seeing more devices- so watch this space.

Social Media is helping the disabled

[av_image src=’http://www.848.co/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/facebook-like-1-300×229.jpg’ attachment=’46289′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ styling=” hover=” link=” target=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ animation=’no-animation’][/av_image]

Nowadays people who use social media religiously are often stereotyped- bored, stay-at-home parents and young, selfie-obsessed teens. Facebook has attracted a new group of people as members since its incarnation, however: deaf people. While once deaf people had to meet in person to have an in-depth conversation, they can now share their thoughts and feelings as easily as anyone else via the social media platforms. As the difference between English sign language and standard English can be quite vast (the grammar is very different between the two), many users turn to the video function, to express their thoughts more naturally.  Many are lobbying for Facebook to make using it in this way much easier for its deaf members- enabling video replies to posts, for instance. I certainly hope Facebook take this on board. After all, it is a social networking site- don’t they owe it to members to help them socialise?

Microsoft have created Holograms

[av_image src=’http://www.848.co/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Microsoft-Room2Room-300×178.jpg’ attachment=’46296′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ styling=” hover=” link=” target=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ animation=’no-animation’][/av_image]

Okay, maybe not quite holograms. But Microsoft are working on a project called ‘Room2Room’, designed to completely change the way we call others. The project uses a variety of cameras to project the image of the person you’re talking to right there in the room with you. Although it sounds as sci-fi as you can possibly get, there’s still a long way to go before we get to futuristic style holograms.

We’d love to hear your thoughts!
