We’re very happy to release the 848 update, a need-to-know guide for all that has happened this week in the world of technology. Released every Friday, 848 aims to sum it all up in 500 words or less! Check back every week for more.

Up first: iOS9
iOS has been the hotly anticipated release of the week, following last week’s Apple announcement. The most anticipated is the 3D touch feature on the 6S and 6S plus, which allows you to ‘peek’ into emails, messages and apps before opening them. For those not lucky enough to have the new device yet, iOS9 also comes with enhanced Siri capabilities, an improved health app, a better notifications menu, enhanced battery life, and a new custom font- which can be quite jarring if you aren’t expecting it. Nevertheless, the app has been well received, with most reviews describing it as a ‘polishing’ of iOS8 rather than a redesign. However, there have been reports of iOS9 crashing some older devices.

What we Like: Enhanced battery life and the ‘low power mode’, which turns off background refresh so your phone lasts longer. iPhones are well known for their quick battery loss- we’re glad Apple is correcting this.

What we dislike: Siri is better, but we don’t think it’s on par with other tech assistants, like Cortana or Google Now. Additionally, we’d love to see Apple build a sturdier charger to accompany their fantastic updates.

Next: Windows Office 2016
Microsoft have announced the update for Microsoft Office 365, to be released on the 22nd September. Excited is an understatement for us. Office 2016 has been further optimised for cloud and mobile use, showing that Microsoft is well aware of how important flexible working is for its customers. It’s billed to be a refreshing change for the familiar software, featuring more themes, search bars for easier navigation, and improvements to the ‘file’ menu for neater file storage.

What we like: that Windows are making Office 365 even easier to use.

What we dislike: Check back next week after the release: it’s too soon to tell yet.

Wierdest tech story of the week
Moving beyond Siri and Cortana, a lot of news outlets have been stepping into the realm of sci-fi in discussing the concepts of Robots- in particular, robots used for relationships. Dr Richardson, a ‘robot ethicist’, thinks this is a terrible idea. This is because she believes the power dynamics in a human-robot relationship would change how a person perceives and interacts with other humans. But we’re a long way away from AI of this capacity- definitely safe from the menace of robot girlfriends for a good while yet!

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this!
