This week on The 848 Update we’re excited to share Microsoft’s news of new, teacher friendly updates rolling out over the coming months. If you’re an avid Facebook video chatter you’ll be excited to hear some news from F8 and, for other social media addicts, we may well have the perfect solution for getting your ideal Twitter handle!

Microsoft are setting themselves up to be a teachers best friend with brand new updates for Windows and Office. The new updates are designed to streamline the process of students signing on to shared computers and will allow schools to buy licenses for applications that they can then bulk-deploy.

This is great news for tech savvy teachers who will find it easier to introduce educational apps to their students. There’s even an ‘Education Edition’ of Minecraft on its way for added entertainment value!

Following Facebook’s F8 conference, the biggest news seems to be focused on the popular chat function. By adding Dropbox support it seems that Facebook are trying to appeal more to business who want to share documents without having them hosted on Facebook’s servers. The option to share directly from your Dropbox now appears in the ‘more’ menu.

For personal users of the applications video-chat function, the round chat head can now act as a smaller stream, allowing for use of other applications whilst still being able to communicate. We can imagine this relatively small change will make the world of difference to avid video chatters who like to multi task!

And now, something for the social media junkies! We really enjoyed Tech Crunch writer Haje Jan Kamps account of how he achieved the elusive first name Twitter handle. It might have set him back 6 months and $250 but he’s now the proud owner of @haje, which is pretty cool!

Don’t expect too much in the way of solid advice – it does involve trademarking your first name which, if it doesn’t happen to be that unusual, is easier said than done!
